Ryanair require a passport for travel, but this requirement is set by the airline, not by either jurisdiction. Even if you show your passport to board a Ryanair aircraft there is no need to produce the document on arrival.

How would you get through passport control then?

Legally all you have to do is to state you are a British or Irish citizen. In practice some form of ID is useful - not too important what it is..

not with a passport, it isnt required!

I have been several times with no passport.
  • Could anyone tell me what Airlines would accept travel to Ireland without a valid passport? I'm looking to purchase some flights to Dublin for my Grandparents as a present but their passports have expired - to renew them would cost £77.50 each and I don't think they will fly again after this, if it happens!

I really wanted to travel with Ryanair because it's the cheapest for the flights (£30.99 pp each way) - any advice would be appreciated a lot. :)

Ryanair will only accept a passport. All other airlines are more flexible - they require ID with photo but are not over fussy as to what it is. A post on page 3 suggests Aer Lingus are happy with a bus pass for example.

Are your grandparents old enough for free passports - born on or before 2 September 1929?

My friend got into Ireland with only an EHIC as ID. There's no photo on that but they let him in.
  • Thanks for your responses - appreciated!

Well my Grandparents are not old enough to get free renewals unfortunately.

It's a shame that Ryanair are the only ones who seem to be fussed about Passport control seeing as they are the cheapest!

It's not a question of being 'let in' to Ireland - it's a question of being allowed to board the plane.

Which airline let him fly - that's the important question.

I've been through Dublin passport control showing only my driving license, and the boarding pass from my Heathrow-departing flight.
