Error when sending emails

On the occasions when I take my laptop to my friend's house I can connect to the internet using her wifi code, and receive emails OK, but I get an error message when I try to send an email. No big drama, but I feel sure that a small adjustment to someone's settings would put this right - any ideas, please? (I'm using Outlook, and my friend has Virgin Media connection if this is relevant.)

Thanks in advance!

If your e-mail account is with your ISP then the settings in your computer are set to your ISP servers. When you send e-mails from a location/connection where you are NOT DIRECTLY CONNECTED to your ISP then they will fail, receiving e-mails is allowed though.

You need to check your ISP email server settings on their site for information on how to send from other locations.

Could be one or more of the following cases:

    1. Your friend's ISP blocks port 25 outgoing if you don't use their server.

Solution: change your Outlook settings to use SSL (port 465) or change the port to 587 without SSL (if that's possible in Outlook and the server uses that port too).

2.a Your mail server accepts connections without authentication if you're connecting from within your ISP's network, but accepts connections with authentication if you're connection from somewhere else

Solution: Set up authentication for outgoing emails in Outlook. For settings refer to your ISP's support pages.

2.b Your mail server only accepts connections if you're using your ISP's network.

    Solution: none
