Green Cat Litter?

I realize this is an older thread but I thought I would share what we do. We use all our old newspapers as cat litter for our two cats. We shred it into thin strips make sure the box is filled near to the top and put a sprinkle of baking soda in the bottom of the tray to absorb any smells.
It gets changed often enough to keep it fresh and dry but it is a great way to save money and to recycle those old papers. My cats don't mind it at all even though both had store bought cat litter for years. And their are lots of friends who are happy to give us last weeks newspaper :rotfl:0 -
I tried using shredded paper (thinking it was a way to save money and use my shredded paper) but mine just stood looking at it and meowing very loudly. I took this as disaproval and went back to using the comercaly produced stuff. I've now got a cat flap and they just go outside."You are entitled to your own opinions but not your own facts" - Arthur Schlesinger

What do you do with the shredded newspaper afterwards tho?? I use Cats Best OkoPlus (wood-based) and flush everything away; I live in a city centre flat so landfill is my only other option ... I do find it very economical, a big bag lasts ages. I rather like the idea of the straw-based litters, which are made in Britain and supposedly more absorbent than even wood.

The cat breeder found it was very similar to World's Best cat litter, but you can buy it for £3.99 for 5Kg instead of paying £8.99 for 3Kg of World's Best Cat Litter.
Update on this: I found poultry crumb/chick crumbs at my local pet food warehouse and used it for a while, but... it ended up being VERY expensive, in a roundabout way! It was great as cat litter, but we got a mouse in the cupboard where I keep the cat litter - because the chick crumb is much more tasty than normal cat litter
:o The mouse was living under the floorboards and coming up through a hole. I pulled out a loose section of floorboard, hoping that the cats would find the mouse. Forgot to inform rest of family about my clever idea. One of children steps into cupboard and puts foot through the hole. Directly below the hole is ornate ceiling rose with antique plasterwork. All trashed. Ceiling and light fittings came down. Fortunately the house insurance covered it but I had to pay an excess, and it was LOADS of hassle. I blame it on the cat litter!
Now I use Oko Plus, which another poster has mentioned. It costs more per Kg than most litters, but works out very cheap for us because it's so effective and clumps so well, it lasts for *ages*. The soiled litter goes on the compost heap and breaks down really well.0 -

The same thought occurred to me, but I've never heard of such a machine. Maybe we could invent one and make a fortune! I've heard of machines which compress old newspapers into logs for the fire, and also wood chipping machines which should work on paper logs too, so combining them into one machine shouldn't be too difficult.
I use all the paper out of my shredder (my theory is that it's shredded and I don't think the most persistant theif would draw the line at sorting through cat poo!!):D and I pass a newspaper through the shredder aswell. Works wonders, and I change it every other day. Puddy cats love it and don't like anything else.
Hope this helps.0
