Green Cat Litter?

Hello,

I'm going to adopt a rescue cat but I'm a bit concerned about cat litter. I know there are various types, supermarket's own brand and more expensive ones, then clumping ones etc. The range is just so confusing! I know I can't add used cat litter to the compost, but I heard somewhere that there's cat litter made from wood pellets that could be composted (maybe on a separate compost heap?).

Help! Anyone found any green and ecological cat litter and a green and ecological way of disposing of it? And how much does it cost?

try recycled paper cat litter - we use this for our cat. On the good side: it is recycled paper so "green", doesnt smell as bad when wet as clay type ones, is easy to remove solids to flush down loo. If you have a compost heap you can put wet litter on it but dont compost cat poo.

downside: if kitty flicks litter out of tray it walks all round the house !! it is so light it gets stuck to paws and then to human feet etc.

tesco's own is horrible but we use morrisons and it is only about £2-2.50 a bag which if you flush away the poo will last for a few weeks. quite often on multibuy in morrisons too so thats when we stock up.

hope you have fun with the new kitty

i use yesterday's news which is made out of recycled newspaper & has anti smell stuff in.. i've only had cleo for a week and apart from one spectacular poo which nearly killed us - it's been relatively ok smelling! i bought it from the cat rescue place but am sure you'll be able to find it in pet shops!
nothing to see here, move along...

When my cat does a poo in the litter tray he comes and gets one of us - we have to follow him back to the tray and clean it up straight away or else he get's upset. :D
Having said that, he only poos in the tray if he's locked in the house (Bonfire night etc). All other times he wees in the tray and goes through the cat flap for his other business!

my cousin was very pleased when her cat pretty much stopped using her litter tray of her own accord and always goes outside now. since cats bury their waste it isn't like a dog poo in the middle of the pavement. She usually goes in my cousin's garden, and that is ok because she has no kids to worry about getting in the flowerbeds with the poo... not sure if this is an option for you? Think worked out well in my cousin's case but probably wouldn't always! but at any rate it is pretty green!

moonrakerz, thanks for the link, loads of ideas on there.

asea, I think I'll give yesterday's news a go, at least it's made from recycled paper.

Lizzieanne, your cat sounds funny :rotfl: :rotfl: He must be a very tidy boy!

morg_monster, I'll have to keep the cat indoors for the first month and then I hope she's going to go in the garden too. My neighbour's cat sometimes poos in my garden but it's not in flowerbeds, it's underneath bushes, well hidden away so I'm not too bothered about it.

I got a couple of bags of SMARTCAT on line when I ordered my cat food. It is made of recycled paper, and cost £9.99 for 10 litres. I then got to thinking how good it would be if I could make my own litter out of yesterday's news. Has anyone heard of a machine that makes newspaper into cat litter?

    Hi ThriftySquirrel,

we've adopted 2 x 13 year old cats who have never gone out because their previous owners lived by a very busy road. So they both use a tray and we're really pleased with this litter. It claims to be environmentally friendly and is called 'Cats Best', we order ours from the link below

    http://petfoodwarehouse.co.uk/browse_91

Costs about £21 for 40 litres including delivery and lasts ages and it really does clump. You flush the solids and pee which also clumps and the remainder is supposed to be compostable tho I haven't tried that [am new to composting this year].

We've had cats for over 30 years and can say its the best one we've found in terms of being long lasting, easy to use, light weight and smelling fresh [most of the time tho the female doesn't bury her poos] and not having to carry it home from the shops is a huge bonus for me [no I don't work for them]

Good luck with your new moggie, they are great

He goes through the catflap for no2? How did you train him to do this, and could you train him to go in the toilet instead?

:p sorry, it just sounds SO like he's sticking his bum out the flap for his a poo! :rotfl:
