I've just got a new cake recipe book and a few of the recipes I fancy use buttermilk.
Has anyone seen it in Sainsbury's? I've looked in the milk aisle and the yogurt aisle but can't seem to find it. Am I looking in the right place or do they just not do it?
If I can't get it what can I substitute it with?

Have seen it with the yoghurts before now but have you looked with the butters/margarine/chilled bakery products it could be there now. They do sell it.peachyprice wrote: »I've just got a new cake recipe book and a few of the recipes I fancy use buttermilk.

I have substituted buttermilk with milk & lemon juice - sorry I can't find a metric/imperial version but it was 1 cup of milk & 1 tbsp lemon juice - apparently you can use vinegar but haven't tried it. Hope that helps.0

Ah, I didn't look with the butters etc., maybe that's where it is, thanks
I've got plenty of lemons, so if all else fails I'll give that a go.
Thanks.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Look at where they keep cream, creme fraiche etc. Our Asda had it there - their layout has milk, then butters/fats/cheese, then yogurts/fromage frais all in separate places, nearby but not same aisles. Its a real pain finding stuff in some supermarkets. I went to a Morrisons recently, and apart from an end display with some special offer cheddar, couldn't find their cheese section at all, and I swear I walked every aisle!

Just a quick note to say I've used the milk/lemon juice sub with great success before now.

Some help on using the substitute and a link on how to make buttermilk from cream.Everyone has a dark side... apparently mine is called Harold?!? :huh:0 -
I saw it in our local Sainsbobs recently in the same end of aisle fridge cabinet as the cream and creme fraiche (as all trustgone says). I decided not to buy it as it seemed like yet another product that I would have to shell out £1+ for that I'd managed to live fairly well without for years. Turns out from the Buttermilk Substitute comment above from mumtosix, I was right!
I've come to the conclusion that most TV cooks have the hidden agenda of us buying more and more esoteric ingredients to push up the supermarket's takings, which would explain their tie-in deals.Better is good enough.0 -
Thanks all, I'll have a lemon left over from using the zest, I'll give the home made version a go, but I will have another look for it for future reference.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0
