"We also offer appropriate dishes for guests suffering from coeliac disease. In case you would like special gluten-free fares, we cordially ask you to contact the hotel prior to your arrival. After having arrived at the hotel, please address yourself to our chef de cuisine to discuss the menu." Copied from hotel.info0

Many thanks for the kind advice - we are going to rent a self cateringapartment with full cooking facilities so mostly we will be eating at home butas ever it would be nice to eat out now and again.
I'll have a look at learning some key phrases and taking some cards with usto show restaurants and hope that helps. One thing we have found here is Indianrestaurants tend to be quite good as they use a different type of flour thanusual.
I did take a look at the celiactravel website it is quite good - in there isalso a link to a Spanish website which gives good details of manyrestaurants/food shops in Spain - one thing I did see that surprised me andbegrudgingly we can use as a last resort is that in all McDonalds restaurantsyou can ask for a burger in a gluten free bun!

My husband has CD for about 8 years now and have holidayed abroad many times with no problems. We have tended to go self catering but eat out most evenings. There are always choices on menu's if you go to a proper restaurant, the main probs we have encountered have mainly been breakfast and snacks especially in France everything is bread based except omelettes but had some great bistro meals in the evening. Don't be too freaked about it. Take it as it comes. You wouldn't starve, always the failsave of steak on most menus. Some of our favourite cuisines that my OH usually has a great choice at are Thai, Indian or Japanese restaurants. Spain has good GF sections in supermarkets and pretty good labelling and their cured meats are delicious and GF.Grocery challenge October: £228.28/£250.00 NSD 4 ( not completed)

I travelled to Portugal, Albuferia area with a group a couple of years back and one of the ladies was a coeliac.
She had a card pre-printed and laminated in Portuguese and showed it in all the bars and restuarants and there was no problem with it. In fact they were quite happy to advise what she could and could not eat dependant on how they had cooked/prepared it.
We stayed in great self catering accomodation
