I'll believe it when I see it would be my view both on a single European Market and cheaper bills.

EirGrid perform the same duties in RoI except they work with ESB who own the assets. ESB also own NIE (not to be confused with Power NI who look after supply). So really ESB own the infrastructure in Ireland and EirGrid control the companies who deal with distribution and the single market in Ireland. Both companies are Irish state owned. You tell me why the regulator approved this as I personally think it stinks (that's my own personal opinion and not that of an employee - well not any more!)

It's on the way - see here http://www.ofgem.gov.uk/Europe/EEM/Pages/EEM.aspx

As for allowing a foreign country to own our generating facilities I believe that's also the case with many GB companies, unless you tell me differently?

It's not to do with the fact it's foreign owned, it's the pretence of competition in the form of a wholesale electricity market when the whole lot is ultimately owned & controlled by the same people. Viridian were made to sell off NIE & SONI as they were deemed to have a monopoly so why is it ok for ESB & EirGrid to own everything?

Could it be that Ireland is getting special treatment for political reasons?

Just a wee bump to remind anyone on power ni to top up before the 18th, I did it twice there (1st time to make sure still 20 digit code) 50 squids a pop and a free quid each time, meter says I have enough for 66 days now :)

    Every little helps :T

ESB and Eirgrid certainly do not 'own everything' - from the consumerline website:

    http://www.consumerline.org/search/?cat=Services+To+Your+Home&item=Electricity
Currently there are four companies who supply electricity to domestic properties in Northern Ireland - Power NI, Airtricity, Budget Energy and Electric Ireland.
    ..
A number of companies are licensed to supply electricity to business customers. These include Airtricity, Energia, Electric Ireland, firmus energy, Power NI and Vayu.

Thanks for the confirmation - just did a £150 one (£4 free) & can confirm still a 20 digit code.
Certain OTT members have caused me to add this disclaimer: all advice given is free of charge & as such should be taken to be IIRC (as I don't spend hours researching all answers  )!
