Replace soil pipe

Hi
I've got an old cast iron soil pipe at the back of my house that corroded badly and finally broke off, leaving about 1.5 sticking out of the ground.
I've asked some builders to come round and quote for replacing it.
Would they be able to cut most of the pipe away and put some kind of collar onto it and then fit a new plastic pipe, or will they have to dig down to the drain underneath and connect the new one there?
Just don't want to get taken for a ride if poss.
Thanks.

Hi
You will probably find the cast iron connects to earthenware drain at ground level. This will almost certainly be cracked.
The builder should suggest digging down to find the nearest sound piece of drain and then grind it off ,fit a drain to 110mm plastic flexible rubber fitting and build the stack from there.

Agree with the above.
He should use the brown plastic pipe for underground, if he needs to and grey or black for above ground.
IIRC the stack should finish some 3 feet above the top of the highest window in the house. Corgi Guy may be able to confirm this. This is to prevent smells wafting back into the house.
Also, he needs to fit a mesh in the top to prevent birds etc laying nests.Behind every great man is a good womanBeside this ordinary man is a great woman£2 savings jar - now at £3.42:rotfl:0 -
Q) What is the minimum distance an external discharge stack should be terminated from a window opening? (height above window)
A) 0.9 m
hope this helps its from part H 1 of the building regs that deals with above ground discharge systems
..it should also be 3 metres away from the nearest window width wise believe it or not!The Early bird may catch the worm ...but its the second mouse that gets all the cheese!0 -
Back in 2000 we moved our soil pipe from in the kitchen to the outside wall.I needed to dig down about a metre to have it connected in.Before any back filling to place the council needed to inspect. We were later issued with a BC
all for £125 then.
Unsure if you need one for a top repair though.Maybe worth phone call to Building Control.
Hope this helps0 -
Sorry got the last bit wrong..if its less than 3 m away from a window needs to be .9m from top of window opening
