I received my motor insurance renewal quote from LV yesterday and was horrified to see that it had crept up to a whopping £531 (from £460 last year) so I thought it might be time to have a quick check online to see whether I was being ripped off.

Being a bit untrusting of insurance companies I entered fake details (same street, different number, same age, occupation, claims history, etc) and the online quote for LV was a shockingly low £360.

I called LV to check how this could be and the rather unhelpful lady took exception to my method of entering "fraudulent" details to get a quote and assured me that their system doesn't detect that you are an existing customer and generate an inflated quote. I asked her what the best price she could offer was and the answer was a rather disappointing £490. I thanked her and let her know I'd think about it (and have a look at some alternative quotes).

So, with nothing to lose I went back online and again tried the LV site, this time entering my true details. To my horror the quote was even lower at £353.

So, I called them back and this time the very helpful (different) lady explained that I had had the policy for quite a long time and that they now use a slightly different policy with "different underwriting criteria", whatever that means.

She went through my details again and came up with the unbelievably lower quote of £289! This was a little cheaper than normal because I also have another "financial" product with LV.

Long story short - I reduced my renewal from £531 to £289 with the same insurer!

I'm looking forward to checking my other LV car insurance at renewal time. I hate to think how much I have been overpaying for the last few years!
