Seagate and Toshiba are normally fitted into mac and windows laptops. I have used both without complaint. Another manufacturer would be Western Digital.

Western digital would be my recommendation avoid Hitachi at all costs though

Unless you're desperate for capacity, fit an 128GB SSD such as a Samsung 840. Much faster, quieter, colder, boots in a few seconds.

Depending where you shop (i.e. ebay, amazon, computer market) it should cost between £20 - £30 for capacities of 160GB up to 320GB or 500GB if you are lucky.

Amazon.......but this doesn't mean you cannot use shops in your local area such as Maplin or a computer shop (i.e. internet cafe/mobile phone type of shop), but they might charge a little more. It also depends how badly you need the hard drive i suppose. I live in London and use a computer fair (market) that charges £29 for 500GB, but even if this is a few quid more or less than ebay etc I still use the computer fair for other things such as cables, so I end up saving pounds anyway.

Scan (www.scan.co.uk) have 2.5" SATA 320GB WDs for £32 inc VAT and 500GBs for £40.

We use Scan a lot for various components, always a very good service and price.

Personally I'd not buy a HD from eBay, unless it was a guaranteed sealed new item, otherwise you just don't know what you are getting. They are so cheap nowadays, why risk it?

    Hi William

I also live in London as well,I was thinking of the computer fair , I actually live near one...Stratford, is that the one you are using, or the tottenham road one, Unfortunately I am on crutches at the moment, but bear it in mind for the future.
