Personalised number plates - ongoing cost

Does anybody know the costs of a personalised number plate in the long term? Obviously the original purchase cost first. If you change cars there is a transfer fee I believe of over £100? Or if you want to retain it if you sell your car there is a yearly fee for that?

All sounds rather expensive if you aren't keeping it on the same car forever? So if anyone can outline the costs and how you can do it as cheap as possible, that would be good, thanks.

    £80 per transfer.

£25 to retain it per year.

Cheapest way is to keep it on one car forever, or never buy it in the first place.

The only variable is the cost of the plate, all the other fees are set by the DVLA.

Personalised number plates are only used by owners with money to burn in my opinion and a way for the DVLA to make loads from peoples hard earned cash

I always thought that the £105 to retain include the £80 assignment fee, for when you put it back on a car. The DVLA website isn't clear on this. Perhaps someone can clarify.

I have the same one on the last four cars and only pay on transfer to a different vehicle.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

yes, but that includes the £80 fee to transfer it to another car. If you haven't transferred the number before the year is up, you need to pay another £25 to keep it for another year... and so on.

I know what you mean. I feel the same way about people who pay good money to watch a football match... or anything else that I have absolutely no interest in.

Actually, I don't. The world would be a dull place if we were all the same.

And a good way of disguising the actual age of a car. Even better if they have significant combination of numbers/letters that are personal to the owner :)
