D-link trouble

Hope you're sitting comfortably, it's a long story
At the start of the year I started having trouble with Tiscali BB and decided to go with Talk Talk (yeah, yeah, I know) The transfer went fine and on the due date I was happily surfing using TT at twice the speed I was with Tiscali, and for free. Yipeeeeeee.
Then TT increased my speed to 8megawhatever and my connection disappeared. I had lots of nice chats with people in India and South Africa, but they all said the same thing. The fact that my PC was connected via a phone extension was the probable cause.
I couldn't move the PC into the room with the main phone socket so the only other thing to do was to go all techy and go wifi.
After a visit to PC World I arrived home with my lovely new wife..............sorry, wifi thingy, a D-link box with a little ariel and a little usb thing to plug into the PC.
I then spent many a happy day trying to get it all to work, and finally, after about 4 week, I've managed to get it all sorted, with the exception that my connection drops every few minutes. Sometimes I can get it back immediately when I click repair, other times I can be without it for the rest of the day. Sometimes the PC usb thingy sees the wife...........wifi router but won't let me onto the net, and sometime it just won't see the router at all.
Can anyone help me with any ideas or software that can help me to get a reliable connection, without having to buy more stuff?
ta much

Are you saying the wireless connection drops, or the actual internet connection?
First of all test the latter by plugging a computer in to the router using an ethernet cable to make sure it all works.
If so we know its either 1 of 3 things:
1) Wirelss USB Hardware problem
2) Wireless Router hardware problem
3) Interference of Wireless
4) software interference
On the router configuration page, try changing the channel that the Wi-Fi is running on (look in manual for how). This will test the interference part and if it still doesnt work we know it could be a hardware problem or a software problem.
Make sure you turn all firewalls off (for testing purposes) and ensure you only have ONE application trying to connect to wireless. For example some wireless cards have extra software like INTEL Pro Wireless, but windows has its own software to do this. If they're both running it can conflict...
The last option is to try another wireless adapter, if you're still having the same problems, its the router!

I lose internet connection, not connection with the router.
BTW, I know you're trying to confuse me ( it doesn't take much). You said 3 things and then list 4

Lol sorry about that.. change it to 4 things then

Make sure there are no settings on your router such as "Idle Timeout". This type of thing turns the connection off if not active for x minutes. Sometimes (stupidly) they can be on by default!!!!! Also make sure any such buttons as "Always keep internet on" are ticked etc....
If its still not working, then 2 more things to try:
1) Do a hard reset of the router by digging a paperclip into the little button on the bottom. Follow the manual and set up the network again from scratch.
2) Try the internet directly to the computer without using the router.
If the internet works directly, and still doesnt work after a hard reset of the router when settings have been re-entered, then you need a new one

ok, thanks. I'll try that.
It just dropped again, but the PC was still seeing the router.
The settings for the router are only available via typing a series of numbers into the browser, but most of the time doing that brings up the modem settings, not the router stuff
I assume I've wired everything up correctly, cos I'm no expert (as you can tell) but I've got the PC with a little gizmo plugged into a USB port, then downstairs I've got the phone socket with the router plugged into that, and the modem connected to the router via an ethernet cable thingy. Is that right? :undecided:0 -
Have you had a look at the router manual and followed the instructions for editing router settings?
I'm also interested in your setup. If you are using a BT Line for ADSL connection you should only haev an ADSL Model. This would plug into the wall socket through a filter, and plug into the computers. It will act as teh MODEM AND the router.. and you dont need anything else.
Are you using the modem AND the router? If so in this situation the modem would be in between the router and the phone socket, and the router would simply act as a routing device rather than connecting to the internet as well.
sounsd like you need to do a hard reset of the router, try and hook everything up correctly, and then start from scratch following the "easy-to-follow" book.

What is the model number of your D-Link router?
If it's an ADSL router then you should not be using the separate modem any more.0 -
Aha, maybe this is the problem.
The "easy to follow book" was actually a cd, which I had on my PC monitor, and had to keep running up and down stairs to see what to do next (gets worse, doesn't it?) I didn't see the point in D-link supplying the manual on cd when you're trying to install a wifi thingy, after all isn't the point of wifi to be able to use things in different parts of the house? not everyone has a lapdog, sorry, laptop. anyway, back to the point.
My BT line is Talk Talk (yeah, i know) so whether or not this is still a BT line, I know not, cos we pay the line rental to TT not BT
My connection goes. Wall socket, filter, cable to router. There's an ethernet (I think) cable from router to modem. and my little usb thingy sticks out of my pc, which is not attached to anything (other than the electricity supply)
Sorry to be a bit slow with this, but I am but a simple song writer and am not suppsoed to be messing around with thigs that have wires and buttons.............they scare me

Ah right. It got me all confuddled when the instrunctions said plug the ethernet cable from the router to the PC. I thought to myself, this is supposed to be wireless, plugging the wireless router into the PC makes it slightly less than wireless and I had no idea where I'd get an ethernet cable long enough to run from the front of the house to the back and upstairs as well.
So I don't need to plug the ethernet cable into anywhere?
