Engine Cleaner Additive - BG244 - Any good?

Hi all,

I've got a 2005 Mini Cooper S that's starting to stutter and stall at low revs/idling. I've been looking at these engine cleaner fuel additives in the hope that they might avoid a big garage bill, and I've tried RedEx with no discernible improvement. One called BG244 (I know, catchy name) sounds like it might be worth a shot. It's about £23 online.

Has anyone used BG244?

Thanks in advance :)

It might just work, much much cheaper then getting the injectors reconditioned.

I put some BG44K (the petrol version) in The Other Car after all the other boys on The Other Car forum raved about it, and it didn't make a jot of difference to the lumpy tickover.

I have to think that anything capable of dissolving all that crud can't be much good for he seals in the fuel system though.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

That sound like a sensor somewhere is giving up the ghost or at least needs a damn good clean. However, if you're going down the injector cleaner route, fill the tank, dose it with the cleaner and take the car out for a good run (at least 50 miles), on and off motorways. When you merge onto the motorway, rev the engine right through the rev range to really give everything a good blast out.

If it's still rough after that, then it really needs looking at I'm afraid. Check out Mini Cooper forums as there may well be a known fault.

if you've tried the redex, not sure how much of a difference that would make - any lights on the dash? Is there hesitation on heavy acceleration?
might be worth putting your 23 quid toward a diagnostic check at a local garage!
minitorque/total mini might be a good place to start if you want to try and solve it yourself...

I'll second the terraclean option. Got my old car done late last year due to failing mot on emissions and was running a bit rough. Terraclean done and car ran fine with a pass on the emissions (found out a couple of weeks later an O2 sensor had failed which was causing the emissions to be higher than they should have been).

At about £80 it's worth giving a go.

Thanks for the replies everyone, really appreciated.

I'd heard good things about the BG one as a reasonably-priced yet high performance cleaner. I do have concerns about how safe it is though, as you've mentioned Facade. Had a look at Terraclean - looks really impressive but a bit out of my price range at the minute. Mini forums aren't too clear on the cause (with some main dealership horror stories to boot), but duff TMAP sensors have been mentioned. Gah.

Reckon I'll take it to a garage for a quick diagnostic check (independent of course, no-one adding a surcharge for wearing a BMW polo shirt), then will likely give the BG a shot if there's no major issues found.

    Thanks again.

Kwik Fit tried to fail my car on emissions unless I gave them £20 for a can of this stuff (BG44K).

See my post on here with the photo of my £20 refund cheque.

It won't stop you car from spluttering and stalling. My 206 was exactly the same as before the stuff was used.

Was skeptical about any of these products.

was averaging 230mile out of a tank per week (average week in week out for 2 years)

Now getting 250-260 miles per week after using BG product.
