Current accounts like Nationwide FlexDirect, Santander 123, LTSB & BoS Vantage etc are offering the best alternative for lump sums currently (pardon the pun :o)

In the short term Virgin (NR reborn), are offering a 1.55% (e-saver issue 6). Not great, but they're isn't much better about. Even the 3.16% account only goes down to 1.5%, better than the 0.1% trick which most do.

if you are an upper rate tax payer, and already have your full ISA quota, i think (and i know this is controversial) that nowadays the premium bonds look more and more attractive.

(i'm in the same boat as you with the loss of 3.16% btw - from 6th june it goes down to a whopping 0.89%!)

1.5% prize fund, no guarantees, but chances of a bigger prize and all tax free. The £3k i currently have in PB's has earned a decent £125 in this last year with 5 x £25 prizes.

I'm moving the money i have in the NR to PB's - see how it goes. it's just not worth leaving them somewhere to get a terrible return and then pay tax on that terrible return to make it even worse!
