Kitchen worktop query

Hi All,
I'm looking for some advice on what action to be taken following a kitchen installation.
The kitchen was purchased from Howdens, paid on credit card. Then installed by a tradesman who is a friend of a relative, paid in cash.
On final inspection a solid oak worktop solid is split right along the front face. Apologies a picture was supposed to go here but it was distorting post size. Suffice it to say the crack is about as long as a cupboard door.
I'm told this is a simple opening of the wood and he will explain on a further visit. Surely this would have been evident when the worktop was fitted?
(A cut out for the kitchen door was made so this detail would only have become noticeable once this was done)
At this point I would have thought the tradesman should have returned it to Howdens and asked for a replacement?
What should I do about this?
Is my redress with the tradesman or Howdens?
I can only imagine that now the worktop is fitted it would cost an awful lot to replace so what would be a reasonable course of action to request?
The tradesman offered to reurn and do some remedial work on the 2nd May and I am still waiting for an appointment. Surely this is going beyond a reasonable timeframe? Though I have to consider he is travelling long distance.
So far I have kept all communication to email so I have a written record of everything with dates & times.
I am trying to remain calm and patient due to the relative connection but after spending £8000 on a new kitchen an imperfection such as this spoils the whole thing.
thanks for any advice,

If the fitter purchased the worktop from Howdens, then it is the fitter's responsibility to resolve the issue.
If you bought the worktop from Howdens, it is for you to resolve the problem with them.
