succeeding a tenancy

My partner has been living & caring for her father since april 2011 in his house & he had an Assured Perriodic Tenecy. He passed away 22nd April 2013 & we are now in the process of trying to succeed tenancy. Would you know how long someone must be living at the same address to succeed& i have been told one year & two years, thank you

    Unless there is an automatic right of succession (read the tenancy agreement), what makes you think you will be allowed to stay?

    Is it council/housing association?

    Has there been any previous "succession", ie joint spouses to single tenant, as often this is allowed once, and that change may have already been used. My parents were joint tenants, and after mum passed last year, Dad succeeded to a sole tenant. My brother has lived there ever since they moved to that house - nearly 10 years ago, but he will not be permitted to succeed if Dad passes/can no longer live there.
