Relocating and handing in your notice

I've been with my employers for 10 years. We are now in the process of selling/moving but we are relocating 200 miles away.

I need to give 4 weeks notice and concerned that the chain will want the average 2 weeks between exchange and completion but this of course won't help me.

I know there is talk of completion hopeful for a date in August so should I give my solicitor a heads up to explain that I need to give 4 weeks notice so could we go for a 4 week gap between exchange & completion?

I'm wary of letting my company now rough dates and handing in my notice in case the sale falls through but likewise I can't give them 2 weeks notice.

  • I would ask for the 4 week completion, but you may not get it.

Sometimes employers let you leave early and take accrued holiday. If you've a good relationship with your line manager, then it's worth a chat to explore - I'd be surprised if you've kept such a major move from those close to you at work.

If all of these fail, then if you've been there 10 years, chances are you have friends or family in the area or at push could you do a travelodge. If you had to stay an extra 2 weeks after the sale, would it be so bad?

    Good luck with the move

we're only 2 weeks into the process so it's very early days. I have thought about having that chat but I'm concerned that as it's so early and things fall through then I feel I'll be in an awkward position at work especially as it could take months to find another buyer then finally complete.

I was under the impression that the gap between E&C would be discussed and suitable for all in the chain and not dicated by one person.
  • It ought to be consensual, yes, but you may not get quite what you are looking for as they are typically a week

Indeed. Though in practice if one person digs their heals in and threatens to pull out if their dates or E-C period is not agreed to the others may have no choice.

also if you need to book the removal company then I'm sure they would need more than a week's notice? especially if it's a Friday in the summer.

And I would thought people would appreciate more time between E&C in order to sort out affairs, pack etc..
