Odd 'Phone calls

I have recently received several strange 'phone calls, at regular random times; when I answer them there is usually a confused sounding person at the other end who is asking for 'Mike' or some other unlikely sounding name. Eventually they mumble something about a 'wrong number' and hang up.
Is this some sort of scam ? I am worried in case it is some Nigerian con man trying to get me to launder huge sums of non-existent money for him, or I have even read about people trying to sell solar panels over the 'phone and I am really worried in case it is one of them, because I don't want to be ripped off.
My next door neighbour's cousin said a man he knows, met a man in a pub who told him it might even be British Gas ringing to sort out my Electricity Bill - I really don't think I could cope with that.
I can't sleep at night because of these calls - what should I do ? Please help me !

:rolleyes: :rolleyes:

Does 1471 reveal the telephone number of the phone used to call you?
Does the person have a foreign accent?
If these were sale calls, the person would launch into his sales patter, not say they had the wrong number and hang up."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0 -

Eeeep, please please dont let yourself get wound up by this. Especially with the Electricity thing. Its pure speculation based on chinese whispers.
Get a whistle, if it carries on blow it down the line. Im sure they wont call again accidentally or not

..try fighting fire fire with fire..when you answer try saying "sorry wrong number"..or "suzannes massage parlour"..either of these will confuse or confound0

Sometimes debt collection agencies use incomprehensible messages to get people to call back. It may not necessarily be a call for you but to fish for information on a neighbour who owes money.The man without a signature.0

I am quite sure all solar panel salesmen have the highest standards of integrity and you can believe everything they tell you; so your fears of being ripped off are groundless;)0 -

Reminds me of the old joke...
Phone rings in the middle of the night. Husband answers it, and says "How should I know? Ring the Weather Centre, you idiot" before crashing the phone onto it's receiver.
"Who was that, darling?" asks his wife;
"God knows." replies husband, "Some idiot wanting to know what the weather was like - kept asking if the coast was clear".0
