In general yes, but the period since 1997 saw a massive increase in entitlement including credits for the 'middle classes', ridiculous housing benefits allowances etc etc.

Some of the allowances were required because of the underlying trends and subsidising employers.

Ridiculous housing benefits due to HPI and falling social housing stock v. demand following principles laid down under previous administrations. I am not entirely sure that recipients of said HB (in most cases) benefited financially, it paid for shelter. Perhaps that level of shelter shouldn't be provided?

The underlying problem is still growing and it isn't getting any better.

So what is your suggested antidote to capitalism?

I'm not sure that an 'antidote' is what is required. People simply need to be able to see through the confidence trick which capitalism has played on us all.

After more than 200 years of industrialisation, daily human experience has not really changed.

Maybe cause and effect are the other way round.

Most of the 'new ' benefits were rediculous and were there for electoral purposes and had the opposite effect to those nominally intended.

    So:
Employers don't need subsidising but inevitably take advantage of the situation created by the benefits system. They created a situation where it wasn't worth it to work.

Housing benefits mainly benefitted the landlords and encouraged HPI.

We needed new housing in areas of shortage and not the subsidy of unemployed to live in Westminster.

The recipients were the losers who lost the will and ability to work and provide for their own.

Which ever way you or I view it the overall "decline" continues apart from the apparent utopia that is in discrete parts of London, SE and a few honey spots.

That's precisely the confidence trick which I referred to in an earlier post.

The rich are richer than they have ever been, and they continue to make the necessary moves to ensure their position.

Our prime minister claims to be in favour of requiring global companies to pay fair taxes, but uses the head of google as an 'adviser'.

The vast majority of peoples of the western nations are enormously better off than even a few years ago.

Just because some-one is even better off does not reduce the reality of the increase in standard of living of the majority.

Sadly many of the peoples of the European nations are suffering unnecessarially because of the mad corrupt socialist politically motivated polices of the EU.

...and the 'skint' get more in pension credits, housing benefits, heating allowances and free bus travel than a truck driver working 40 hours per week and probably more than their grandparents could dream of no matter how much graft they put in.

That's capitalism - the rich get richer and so do the poor.

It's good that we all agree that the benefit culture must be ended and the sooner the better.
