Newbuilds and Garages

Hi
I've just read the article below where the owners are complaining about the garage not being big enough to either park their car or open the doors. The estate I'm moving on to everyone has garages but they're full of other stuff (bikes, lawn mowers etc). Thinking about the garage I'll have you could fit a car in but one of the other properties I viewed you'd be lucky to fit a Fiesta in it so obviously not designed correctly.
This got me thinking whilst a garage is a desirable extra but how many of us use them for cars?
Also is this is another case of buyer beware or misrepresentation?

Are cars just getting wider?! Most people I know never bother garaging their cars, except my parents (it's a 12 yr old new build and a bit tight) and our neighbours who had their detached garage built for them. Immediate neighbours use theirs as a furniture repository with extra big freezer and two fridges. In our last house we garaged our 'good' car but not the manky old 4X4. But again, the garage had been built specially for the previous owner who was a mechanic. In our second home we had a double garage (house was 6 yrs old) and our Alfa GTV 'just' fitted in one side - if it hadn't been a double garage you'd never have got the drivers door open.0

When I had one I never used it for my car once. When I was moving it was clear I used to use it to store junk I never used and couldn't be bothered to throw away. In reality a loft and shed is now more than adequate for me and atleast now I have no excuse for not getting rid of things. No more 'I'll just stick it in the garage for now' and then never get round to getting rid.
My parents have a double garage and 2 cars. Never used it to park in either. But I would expect a garage to fit a car, but do they have to specify what car can fit in there? I doubt it.
Each to their ownAn opinion is just that..... An opinion0 -
I use ParkatMyHouse when I go into town, and it never ceases to amaze me that a £7m townhouse (just around the corner from Buck House) can have a garage that only just fits my little Yaris.
At home? Double garage. Probably fits (cough).import this0 -
I've just moved to a house with a garage and is currently housing 'stuff'. However, it is big enough to fit my mid size car in (1960's build) ..... But I have agreed one of my close friends can park his motorbike and jet ski in it as he hasn't got a garage....... As he is also my mechanic and I would like to continue getting free MOT's and services, I wasn't about to say no!!!!!0

My house has a detached double garage and usually one of the cars is in it (left hand side as you look at it so that you can open the driver's side doors).
Other side houses motorbike, spare fridge, pushbikes, go kart, DH's brewing kit, and all the other !!!! people keep in garages.
Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
My garage is now my kitchen - it was very therapeutic getting rid of lots of stuff I'd kept 'just in case'.0

No room for a car in our double garage. It has OHs 2 motorbikes and off roads bike, 4 push bikes, 2 flikrs, cross trainer, static bike, slam man, freezer, beer stash  , bin of wild bird seed, petrol mower, various toys, various gardening bits, various car/bike cleaning stuff, roof box....... I think you et the idea!
However we are not hoarders and all of it is used.0 -
I noticed this in a house listing yesterday. Looked like it had a garage at the front but it was only about four feet deep on the plans, rest had been converted into another reception room. IMO, convert the whole space or none of it - don't leave a fraction of it! Would have been disappointed if I hadn't seen the plans and I'd gone to view expecting a proper garage.
I honestly don't know anyone who has a garage that actually uses it for parking. The closest is my in-laws who use part of theirs for motorbikes, but wouldn't be able to fit the cars in due to the stuff. When I did have a garage (and a car - don't have either now) the only thing in it was the car. But I don't really have any stuff, am naturally quite minimalist and have moved around too much to hoard.0 -
I'm not cynical I'm realistic
