Any rights after being sold a write off

Assuming this isn't a win-up, it is NOT illegal to put a Cat B write-off back on the road.
It requires a VOSA VIC inspection before it can be however.
If the OP has a V5 and has been taxing the car for the last 12 years, it must have been passed by VOSA.
Cat b cars are spares only with the body shell being crushed so they can't be returned to the road.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -
It's hardly worth much as it is. Make sure you get a HPI certificate with your new car ....0

That's only an ABI recommendation. He's quite right that there's nothing in law to stop you returning even a cat A to the road.
Imagine I go out this evening and someone in a Chelsea TractorT-bones my little red Daf. The shell is twisted beyond recognition and the emergency services cut the roof off to get me out (miraculously unharmed). The car will be cat B, or possibly A.
But I happen to have a never-registered NOS shell sitting in my workshop because I was planning a reshell anyway. I'm still legally allowed to go ahead with the reshell and return "the same car" (ie: same VIN and reg number) to the road despite the cat B write off.
But you'll have real problems finding an insurer to touch a car that's been cat B or worse, even if it's been repaired properly, because they all work to the ABI guide.0 -

Sorry you are correct, if the car is retained by the insurance company then the shell is crushed but if you buy it back there is nothing (if you have the cash)stopping you putting it back on the road.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0 -
There was an argument on here a few years ago about getting Cat B on the road again.
One thing is for sure Joe Public can't buy Cat A or B from Copart.0 -
Cat B's are often flood/water damaged, they don't always have to be mangled messes
I've seen many of the above back on the roads. There must be something in the small print of the Insurance companies that actually insure these vehicles (& its probably only high-lighted if you have an accident/issue)0
