Not really, a relative unexpectedly inherited £70K (one third) of the estate left by a maiden aunt, and as she already has a £185000 portfolio and 4 pensions, she paid my debts off for me, I did refuse, but she insisted. I only paid 10 months (£4000) myself but was fully prepared to see it to the end.

Another relative took their own life last year because of redundancy and debt, so I think that made her so insistent.

It was given to me on the condition that I never get credit again, and I won't.

She paid £24000 to clear £36000.

So I can't take credit for it being paid, but I have totally changed my attitude to money, spending, borrowing and saving, and I hope I can help others in a small way at least, from what I have learned.

    Crying a bit now.

Even with help from a relative (and isn't that a wonderful gift) you have done well, and changed your attitude for the future. You had paid ten months from what would have been 8 years of payments, but you were doing it. You should be really proud.
  • Well done. Time to rebuild your life again ;)

I can't begin to say how grateful I am for this gift. I only hope to follow her example and save for a happy future, especially for my son.
To waste money now would be ungrateful and disrespectful to her.

Aww wow what a great relative and im so pleased for you that you are finally debt free :)

Enjoy your debt free life now with your son :)

I was determined to shift my debts before my eldest girl turned 10 yrs old as I grew up with my parents spoiling me and my sister, but all I ever knew was paying for this stuff with a credit card, I believe this had a huge impact on how I was with money. This made me determined to shift the debt before her 10th birthday as I don't want my kids growing up around debt. She is 9 and 10 in 4 months time!! I got there in time lol.
  • That is lovely news, imo, I don't think it matters how you get DF (so long as it's legal and not at the expense of others!) so long as you get there. What a lovely day this is for you, enjoy it and embrace the emotions you feel, it will be remembering days like today that ensure you don't find yoursel find yourself in that situation again.
Some times you have to hold back to go forward to where you want to be.
