Opening external HDD

I've taken the HDD out of my old computer and I want to open the files and maybe transfer some, Picasa etc to my new computer.
I've connected to my new computer using a USB 2.0 to IDE cable set up.
The old HDD is shown on my new computer devices page
And the HDD device is working properly.
But every time I try to open the files I get
F\:is not accessible. Access is denied.
Now a month ago I did manage to open, read and transfer some files using an iObit programme, iirc, but I can't remember how I did it.
Is there any way that I can open, read and transfer some more files????
The old computer, over 10 years old, went kaput and wouldn't load windows.

hi,
there is a little add-in you can get called "TakeOwnership", which if installed and you right-click on the drive and select, should run a batch program transferring ownership of all files to you.
Cant remember where I found it but its proven very useful!
Failure here may just mean the drive is broken, of course. try running "chkdsk /r" from command prompt maybe
good luckFriendly greeting!0 -
Thanks I've run chkdsk etc and the ext HDD is working correctly.
It's just when I try to open and read it I get the not accessible prompt.
I'll try the Takeownership add on later today or tomorrow. It's your money. Except if it's the governments.0 -
This'll be the thing you need. Ignore the Vista bit, works in W7.

My new computer runs Win8.
Will it work with that.
I'm just a bit wary of ruining my new computer. It's your money. Except if it's the governments.0 -

Why using a 3rd party program for such a basic and already built-in function? It might take a few more clicks, but it's somewhere under "Sharing and Security... " when you right-click on a file or folder...0
