Best map I've seen - though it's missing motorway junctions which would be useful

The best map I know of, in terms of coolness and functionality is http://www.map24.com, but is only covers the US and Canada :(

Brilliant! If you're looking for a local business or organisation, you can simply put in a word and a postcode, and it will list all matching businesses, in order of distance from that postcode. It will also show them all on the map. :)

Until now, I've always used http://www.thomweb.co.uk for local info - but Google absolutely knocks spots off it. Thomweb can be quite fussy which categories businesses fall into - but Google doesn't seem to care about that, it will simply match words in the name of the business, or in some description field - for example, "food" seems to bring up all the grocery stores, restaurants and takeaways, as you'd expect.

Better for road route planning - because it covers routes to anywhere in Europe, not just the UK.

Google maps just seems to show roads, railway lines, rivers and canals, and not much else. I think http://www.multimap.com is better for detail of landmarks and tourist attractions.

For close range detail in the UK, I think the interactive map at http://neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk is the best - you can usually see individual buildings, and foot-navigable alleyways between them, which are often omitted from maps designed for drivers. Great for navigating through dense urban areas on foot or bicycle, but you wouldn't use it to plan car journeys.

  • I agree that multimap is one of the best - the thing I like is that the maps at certain scales are actually OS maps, and I'm used to using those. The routeplanning in the UK is good, too. I also like the aerial photos combined with a map - have a look at this one around York Minster

A couple of others I have used are mapquest, streetmap and viamichelin; mapquest is good for the USA and viamichelin was very good for planning a route on the continent, as it gave a variety of routes

As long as you want to see England or Wales. What is it about map sites and Northern Ireland?
