ebay free listing weekend question

I put an item £300 on ebay because I was notified it was a "free listing weekend" Now ebay have billed me £30.

So what did I get for free?

As the name of the weekend suggested you got a FREE LISTING, ie no fee which would have been ,erm, ah dunno about £1.50 to list an item worth £300? it didn't state anywhere on ebay about "final valuation fee" free weekend now did it?

Ebay take around 10% of your final sales figure, you must bear this is mind next time! Ebay may be FREE to list on promo weekends, but it is NOT free to sell!

As 123 sayas you get your listing free exactly as it said you would do.

Always read the announcements, in fact read anything that has t and c's and where money is involved- do not just assume you know what you are doing.

10 % is not unreasonable for auctioneers commission I just wondered what I was saving that's all.

10% is not greedy, the 20% in my local auction house is hard to swallow and you don't get the same exposure as Ebay.

Come on, theres a lot of actual work in an auction house.

I speak to Ebay once a year for all my fees - the rest is automated or done by myself and the buyer.

You can save a fair bit on free listing weekends especially if you get close to the limit of 100 items and even more if they are expensive items but there's no escaping the final value fees.
If you don't want to pay 10% fees to ebay and you'd be happy with a fixed price then use some or all of the many free ad sites such as Gumtree (owned by ebay), freeads, loot, preloved, etc, etc.
I use them for large items especially and do quite well. Most sales are local so dont involve postage. I've never paid fees either.
Avoid craigslist. Although you can state where you are based you'll get lots of time wasters from the US. I've never had anyone from the UK on there

Yep, but the main software does all the work and has been costed. In fact - if they stopped messing with the site - there would just be upkeep costs and customer service.

But each auction at an auction house is individual, has a team, brochures to make etc and a small customer base. Ebay makes millions per second with its extortionate fees.

Things on the internet are cheaper due to lower operating costs.
