If you are going to buy bin liners then I'd look for ones made out of recycled plastic personally. I still use old carrier bags in bins - we only have one small sack of rubbish a week so every now and again I 'forget' my bags for life. Sainsbury do black bin liners from recycled stuff.

  • Personally, I ditched the pedal bin a long time ago, so no need for liners. They alway ended up with bits of food round the rim etc. So now all waste goes straight into the dustbin, which is lined with a council blue bag and is by the back door. Recyclable stuff is put into a bucket which is kept ontop of the boiler. Every morning after the postman has been all recycle stuff is put into the garage in separate boxes ready to take to the centre when we're passing.

The Irish Republic introduced a "green" tax on carrier bags a couple of years ago.

Since then the amount of plastic being sold as plastic bags has actually increased !

This is because supermarket carrier bags are made from extremely thin plastic,Specifically produced bin liners and plastic bags are made of much heavier gauge plastic - primarily because the consumer would complain bitterly if he paid good money for bags that were as thin and flimsy as carrier bags.

Another "green" own goal ! but millions of people still think it has been a great success !

    This is worth a read:-
