Have a fantastic time Torbrex I know you will its a wonderful place. The only let down we had was a really expensive ships tour to Prince Edward Island from Skagway bear watching and because the weather was so hot there were no bears! However, we did a $10 bus trip in Juneau to the Mendenhall Glacier and saw plenty! Enjoy!!!!!

    Home again :)

The weather could not have been better, it was warm enough that I only required 1 layer plus my hiking togs on most days with only 1 rainy day and that was on the sea kayak trip out to the glacier where the dull weather actually helped show off the glacier better :T

It did rain every day that I was in Anchorage but it certainly was not cold and I just carried on the same as I would have done at home :D

In all it was a great trip and I would certainly encourage anyone thinking of going to Alaska to get as deep into the heart of the country as they can even if it is with an organised tour like I did, the scenery just takes your breath away and the wildlife is 'right there'

Happy to hear that you had a great time.
It sounds like it was definitely worth the wait :)

    Thanks Jackie :)

It was a very long journey though, I think if I were to do it again, I would have at least a 1 night stopover in each direction.
  • We took a 7 day cruise with RCCL on the last week of August last year (2012). Only one day of rain, the rest of the time was mostly overcast, definitely jumper weather. The most annoying part was the morning mist which took a long time to clear.
August is always unpredictable and we felt that all the hype on Alaska was not realised - hope you have a good relaxing time.

I, for one, would be interested in hearing more about your trip Torbrex.
Alaska has been on my "to do" list for quite some time now, but I've been considering the Explore/Exodus type options rather than a truly local operator.

I'm only half way in my collection of US states. Mainly because I seem to spend a lot of time revisiting ones I've already been to, in order to catch up with old friends. I'm impressed that you are closing in on the full set - which one remains (if I had to guess I'd say Hawaii because it is 'out there' a bit)?

I will be doing a diary (with pictures) of my trip at some point and will post a link in here :)

I went with a local company simply because it offered me the best deal around, it might have been different if I was not a solo traveller as the single suppliments with some of the other operators were crippling to say the least.

You are correct, Hawaii is the last state on my list and it was intended that way.
I may start doing re-visits once I have been there but I will be fully retired by that time so I will not have the same kind of budget that I have been used to in the past.
