Amex Charge Card for Foreign Currency Purchase

Hi guys,

Can anyone confirm whether Amex treat foreign exchange (ie ordering travel money online for collection at the airport) as a purchase (no fees) or as a cash-advance (thereby attracting fees). I'm talking about using a charge rather than credit card.

I've received somewhat conflicting information with some people insisting that it goes through as a purchase and others, including what I can gather from the T&Cs, saying it is a cash-advance.

Has anyone done this recently? Happy for input from anyone but ideally I'd like to hear from someone that has actually done this - I know that if it says it's a cash advance in the T&Cs then it should be but as I say, others I've read are adamant.

Cheers.

    Partly correct.

Buying from American Express counters e.g. at airports using an AmEx-issued AmEx card is treated as 'finance' rather than cash. The terms are quite specific, though. Best to check detailed threads at headforpoints.com and to buy in advance, collecting at the airport.
