I got my Ubuntu upgraded to 7.04(Feisty Fawn) and installed beryl
and it looks bloody great :)

Here's a little vid, quality is not fantastic but you get the idea...

This machine is going to be a media centre/TV server eventually
when I can afford the TV card and a router.

If you want to be using it as a media centre then ditch beryl and just use MythTV.

Feisty Fawn has the MythTV backend built in
but I don't have the equiptment to set it up
yet so fancied trying Beryl and am well impressed.

I will probably go with MythTV but LinuxMCE
    looks very good aswell.

No mate, had it about 4 years.

    ATI RADEON 9600
    512MB Ram
    160GB HD

nothing that special really, just got a new gaming machine
so decided to put the old one to good use.

FF doesn't have the mythtv backend built-in, but it is in the repositories like most other Linux software.

If you just want a mythtv box i'd recommend mythbuntu - it's a cut down respin of FF but with all the crap taken out that you don't need with a simple mythtv box. It's only just been released, but is done by the guy who packages mythtv for ubuntu - so it should work fine.

Beryl is lovely though, you're right. It may seem like a gimmick but the 3d cube thing is really nice and gives a user a visual cue as to what's going on, which makes using my mythtv box easier (I have myth on one desktop and fullscreen firefox on another)

edit: p.s. - regarding the tv card. Are you going to use a dvb one? If so then i'd avoid any of the dual tuner ones at the mo - the hauppauge one doesn't work properly under Linux yet (it crashes the machine when retrieving EIT data) and another PCI Express one we have at work doesn't work under Linux at all. Any older cards will be fine though.
