It just seems so odd to be planning it for all that time, but not getting on with it.

Not at all. I've taken the precaution of having planning passed for work which I'll probably not be able to afford for many years, perhaps never, but as we'll have to dig there anyway, the footings will go in. It's a no-brainer, adding a small amount of value roughly equal to the cost.

The wall might or might not not be challenged on right to light grounds, but to decide whether that would be worthwhile, the person concerned would likely need the advice of a specialist surveyor.

Presuming all this was gone into when the plans were approved in 1986 (not exactly the dark ages!) I would assume that a challenge will be difficult. However, people's expectations of indoor light levels have risen historically, according to RICS, so who knows?

Obviously worth digging up the original permission and making sure the new structure matches that...

isnt this the sort of thing the convenyancer would flag up ?
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

Why? Do conveyancers normally flag up planning permissions given 28 years ago? How would they know the structure had not been built?

All this underlines the importance of knowing the planning history of any place where you intend to buy, all available FOC on the local authority web site. ;)

Well, top marks for honesty! :A

As I'm here, my DW tells me it's not even necessary to put in the footings if the PP is granted on a project which has, say, two extensions. I can't vouch for this, but apparently that's why we stuck the extra bit onto our plans, even though it's optimistic to think we could pay for it.
