iPad magnetic cover turns off display when folded at back?

I'd just like to check how it is with other folks' iPad 2 covers.
I have a non Retina iPad 2 and the Apple brand magnetic cover. With the iPad "Cover Unlock/Unlock" set to 'On' it turns off the display when cover is closed over the screen. BUT if I fold the cover neatly to the back to grip the iPad, it ALSO frequently turns off the screen, as if the magnet were too strong and reaching right through the iPad to the front.

So the question is, 'am I holding it wrong' or is there a fault with my cover?

For comparison, my wife's iPad Mini with a similar but non-Apple cover off Ebay ONLY turns off the screen closed at front, never at back, just like I want.

I have for both, mini and 2, both smart covers from apple itself and neither turn off the screen when flat backed.

Has it always done this or is this only recently after an update?

** However googling it does say:
"The iPad 2's sleep/wake sensor wasn't polarity specific," Booth explains. And that apparently led to an issue for iPad 2 users who flipped their smart covers around so that they sat flush with the back of the tablet — an everyday act that could cause the iPad 2 to switch off unintentionally.

In that article (from a year ago mind) it does say some have exchanged the smart covers for newer ones to work with ipad 3, but I don't know if it will solve your issue. You could always pop into apple store at some point with it and see what they suggest. It obviously is a known issue, but not something I have personally come across myself with my use.

Yeah looks like an appointment with the Genius bar, to check the fault, then off to Ebay/Amazon for the actual replacement cover!

I don't know if the earlier covers were different, but I bought mine second hand from Cash converters or similar place for £15 with a blemish on it. It would've been not long after they all came out, so perhaps that makes a difference.

I've never experienced the turning off that google tells me about. Before buying a new one, find some places with problems listing that, like the one site above, print a couple out to take with you and see if they would exchange it, or replace it as it's not really broken, but it doesn't work right IYSWIM.

If you need to buy another one, look at places like tescos with clubcard vouchers (people have been getting a £5 off a £20 buy online @ direct voucher with the latest lot of clubcard vouchers sent out.)
