    Thanks for the info there.

Yes, the heat for the water is metered. Last month I used 6 kwH.

Well, I already have the new central heating system, if you can call it that. It's basically just split type air conditioning which is more economical than a radiator system.

So if I were to manage to cancel, I'd have to remove their boiler and put in my own electric boiler.

    - your LA will have a department that can advise on who to complain to about private sector service charges

I don't think blaming Eon for your decision to not use the building as intended is very fair. Not quite sure what minimum wage has to do with anything.

My comment about the minimum wage was simply making a point. Your post came across as if people here only have a right to complain and ask for advice if they are not financially comfortable.

    Hello,

I've just moved into a new build which uses E-on's district heating system for hot water. Every apartment owner must pay £27 service charge each month to use their hot water.

The problem is my actual usage is tiny as I removed my water based central heating system and therefore only use hot water for showers.

So each month I'm charged under £5 for hot water usage but with the addition of a £26 service charge.

I do respect that E-on's district heating offering is great for most people but it's just terrible value for me.

Do I have any options? Can I go to an ombudsmen of some sort and argue that I should have a service charge proportionate to my usage as I'm wasting so much money on this system?

    Hi Mark

Community Energy schemes like the District Heating system at your property are managed exclusively by our Sustainable Energy team.

Have to admit, my knowledge of the individual schemes is very sketchy. They're run separately from the general customer service areas by specialist advisors. These are the guys to speak to.

There's more detail about both this team and the schemes in general on our website. If you drop an email to the address in my Profile, I'll be happy to put you in touch with them.

Sorry I can't offer anything more specific.

Thanks for the offer to help, Malc.

    Just to provide an update:

I spoke to E-on today and although they were unable to reduce the service charge, I was happy to discover that they would allow me to disconnect completely at anytime without incurring a charge.

So what I will do now is work on getting my own boiler installed and then cancel my contract with E-on. Not ideal but within a few years will save me a lot of money.
