X box headset help

Bought 2 wired microsoft headsets - the ones that plug into the handheld controller.
We have an x box live subscription, but sound only comes out of the set of headsets plugged into the controller which is signed into x box live.
The second controller doesn't send or recieve sound.
I've swapped the headsets over, to check that they are not faulty, and they both work - but only if they are plugged into the controller that is signed into x box live.
Is there a solution to get sound out of both of the headsets at once?
Please tell me I don't need 2 x box live subscriptions :eek:
