Save The Date cards - will people reply?

1) No, people do not reply. It is a notification, not an invite.

2) Yes, it is polite to do so. Also to send invites to those you already know cannot come eg because of distance/illness etc.

I made a save the date Facebook event and added everyone that would eventually get an invite (wedding is a year away) most people are "going" but about a dozen haven't put either way so now I'm not sure Invitations will go out about 2/3 months beforehand so that there is time to sort out replacements for guests that can't come.

Just put a polite little note saying "no need to reply, just save the date in your diary," That's what we plan to do.
