There were charges for current accounts in the 80s but they were waived if you kept a balance of £100 .... and there certainly were annual charges for credit cards.
AND, of course most of the rest of the world pay for their banking with direct charges!

from what i remember when i first took a barclaycard out in about 1995 there was an annual fee of a tenner anyway although since mine was a student bcard i beleive i was exempt from paying it and by the time i graduated they had scrapped it anyway

    Maybe a student based fee?
AFAIK Barclaycard have never had an annual charge, well I have never paid nor would pay, unless they all charged. I have had one since around 1969 when they started up, currently 3, so I will be dropping all 3 if they do start charging.

Barclaycard was the first UK credit card.
A new way to buy now pay later, fee free and partial payment accepted.
Previously there were only US based charge cards that you had to pay off in full, AND were charged a hefty annual fee ( Amex and Diners Club). A few years later Natwest started Access, when they realised there was money to be made by charging retailers up to 6% of transaction as well as getting interest from those who used the credit side of the card.;)
