My nexus 7 is pinging

When not in use there is an annoying pinging noise coming from my Nexus 7. What is it and can I stop it?

Perhaps it's warning you that the battery is low? Remember that the power switch puts the tablet into medium-deep sleep, not 'off', so still using the battery0

It pings all the time and is pinging now as I sit at my desktop. I do not switch it off as such but use a case which must send it to sleep when I close the lid.0

It will ping on receipt of emails, have a look at you sound settings it pay be responding to other such as. twitter, facebook etc.

Believe it or not I do not subscribe to Facebook or Twitter and there have not been any emails while it has been pinging. Oh it has just pinged but no email.0

Could it be pinging because there's a NFC tag underneath it? Or perhaps a contactless debit/credit card?0
