CDs and DVDs can be recorded in a special format so, for example, you can play an audio CD in a standalone player, and a video DVD in a separate box attached to your TV...
You could try to convert the video files you have into DVD video format (do a web search for DVD authoring), but it's a pain in the bum and... you only need to do that if you want to be able to play the DVD in a standalone player.
As well as the special audio CD & video DVD formats, computers can use these types of optical disks to store any types of computer files on, a bit like a floppy disk or a hard drive or whatever. But, of course, if you "burn" (i.e. record) the files like this, a CD won't play on a separate CD music player and a DVD won't play in your set-top box.
So, if you just want to save the video files, you can use any disk so long as it has enough "space" to store them. A CD can typically hold 700MB, while a single-layer DVD can hold 4.7GB, a double-layer DVD 8.4GB, a Blu-Ray 25GB and a double-layer Blu-Ray 50GB.
You may well have CD/DVD-recording software on your PC, but if not, a really quick & simple program to do this would be the free version of DeepBurner:
