The right credit card for me!

Greetings all!

I hope you are all doing well.

I have browsed these forums for a while, and always found the community here very knowledgeable and wise

Me and my partner are currently saving for a mortgage. We manage our money very well. We have no credit cards so are worried about our credit rating (worried incase our rating isn't good enough to be aproved for a mortgage).

So my question to all you lovely people... Should we get a credit card (each) and say just purchase our fuel on and pay it off in full once a month? If so what would be the best sort for us? We probably spend £35 a week on fuel and i know there are various ones to look at that have fuel perks. We don't want a Santander account where we have to pay £x per month.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

if it's your first credit card then you are relatively unlikely to get one with benefits

try your own bank first as they know how you manage your current a/c
  • Thanks for the speedy reply.

Would purchasing fuel on the card be a good way to build up a credit score? We would obviously set up a direct debit to pay it off when it is due.

    Thanks

I've modified your post to accurately reflect what you're trying to achieve.

It doesn't matter what you buy, only that you repay (at least the minimum payment) on time.

Spending more, ie on groceries and other essentials, may demonstrate to other lenders later (should you try for a better card) that you can handle larger amounts...and therefore earn them more in merchant fees.
  • Brilliant, many thanks for your help.
