Can I have a Debit card?

Hi, I am a new poster here so some background, I have £39000 of defaults on my credit file all from last summer, the last of my creditors will be paid this week. I have a basic bank account with HSBC, with just a cash card.

This allows me to withdraw £200 a day.

From next month I will have between £600 and £1100 a month (depending on overtime) disposable income now the debts are paid, a good chunk of this I am going to save in an ISA and also overpay on my mortgage.

Are the bank likely to let me have a 'normal' current account with a debit card, I don't want an overdraft or a credit card ever again but not having a debit card is a real problem, and I don't really like carrying £100s in cash. I don't want to go in and ask if its a definite "no"

Or will I have to get a pre-pay card and wait for my defaults to drop off.

I am fully aware the defaults are of my own doing and that I will have to live with the consequences.

I'm pretty sure HSBC just started issuing normal debit cards on the basic account. If you give them a call and ask for one they should send you one.

Failing that open a Barclays CashCard account or a Nationwide CashCard account.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

Barclays were one of my ( now paid ) creditors so they probably won't take me, will ask in HSBC and have a look at Nationwide if HSBC say no, Thank You :)

I sometimes need to spend more than £200 in one go, and yesterday I had to drive into the city centre and park for £5 (not very money saving or green) to get theatre tickets because I can't book on line, and I like to go camping and can't book a pitch :(

I don't want to do anything extravagant, just have a debit card.

A cashcard account won't give you what you are looking for. you do need a current account if HSBC won't issue a debit card on a basic account.

RBS issue a Visa Debit on their basic account but you can't use it for pay at pump for example as all transactions have to be authorised in real time by the bank

    Sorry, but you are wrong.

HSBC now offer debit cards on basic bank accounts.

OP just send them a secure message asking for one. Should be with you in around 7 days.

I am happy to be corrected on this.

I didn't know as I bank with First Direct as I've said before.

You will note I did say if they won't, I didn't say they didn't.

Nationwide's Cash Card Plus is an online debit card, but they're in some sort of denial about it and refuse to call it a debit card.
"It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis

I am happy with my basic bank account, in that I don't need an overdraft or any fancy features, if they have started having a debit card it that would be perfect for me. I will ask in the branch, I'll wait until my last debt is paid first though :)

You won't need to. Its an authorisation only debit card, so no credit facility.
