Can I get help towards my parents council tax whilst I'm on jsa?

I have just been made unemployed and someone mentioned that my parents may get some help on their council tax whilst I'm in this situation. Is this true? And if so, what do they need to do?

Thanks

Unfortunately, even with the new scheme, you are not the liable party for Council Tax and so there is no help available because of your income.
I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.

Hi fluffymovie, My parents are both retired and on pension. He was told last year that he might be eligible for some discount but when he told them that he had a daughter who was earning a full time wage they advised that he wouldn't be entitled to it. They also mentioned something about my savings would also be taken into account. Is this true? Can you shed any more light on the topic? Thanks. :-)

As there are more than 2 adults in the property then it is unlikely that you would get a discount under the new Council Tax Reduction Schemes.

A lot of councils have done away wth the 2nd adult rebate that could be claimed for non-deps on JSA etc.
  • If the parents are on benefit and receiving LCTS then the non dependant deduction would change of the non deps income changes.
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

If your parents are claiming council tax support at the moment then while you were working they would have received less because of your income being taken into account (not your savings) - called a non dependent deduction.

Now you are receiving JSA ( if it is income based) then this non dependent deduction would not be taken.

Difficult to help further as we do not know if your parents are eligible at the moment/receiving council tax support.

Many pensioners do not realise they are entitled to council tax support so if is worth telephoning your local council offices and asking.
