It was only when I put the heater on, the crack emerged,.
That to me says that you probably had a small stone chip. The temperature differential caused by the heater being used has now caused a crack to emanate from the chip.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.

Even if the garage did cause this (which will be hard to prove a week after them working on it), you would have had to have give them the opportunity to rectify it before going elsewhere.

As for using your insurance to save £45, not sure I would have done that.

As above, you shouldnt have bothered going through the insurance to save yourself £45, it will end up costing you more in the long run as you will now have to declare a claim when you renew for the next few years.

Pretty sure windscreens don't count as claims

Won't affect your NCD but a claim is a claim so still has to be declared on renewal.

They don't. For every insurer I've ever used.

If you use Swiftcover then you don't get the NCD for the year the claim was in.

I.E if you have 3 yrs NCD and claim for a windscreen then next renewal you will only be credited with 3 yrs and not 4.

Not with my insurer you don't. As they aren't counted as "claims". Pay peanuts and get monkeys.
