Does anybody know of an android app that does this. My phone has only a rear facing camera. It appears that most are for front facing cameras. Oh, and it obviously must be free

How do you intend to see the screen at the same time as seeing the camera?
Mirrors would do it; eg http://www.phonearena.com/news/Turn-your-rear-facing-camera-into-a-front-facing-one-with-Vainworks_id15672
Or if you just want to use the rear camera in some kind of video chat where you can't see the other person, Tango http://www.pcworld.com/article/242721/how_to_video_chat_with_tango_on_your_android_or_ios_device.html0 -

That's a bit pointless. But that article doesn't really say that, it says you can use it like a 2-way webcam?0 -
How about a mirror?! You hold the phone facing you so you can see the screen, the camera can (hopefully) see the reflection of you in the mirror.0

So with all today's technology there is still no answer to this then? Bought phone 6 months ago and didn't realise I would want this. My next phone will have to have front and rear!0

In that case I don't understand what you are trying to achieve; that is, if you are trying to have a video call on your phone (and not to use your phone as an add-on to another computer, ala webcam), but if you are solely trying to use the phone to make video-calls, and you're starting with a phone that has a screen on one side and a camera on the other, then there is no way that technology can magic a camera onto the front of your phone.
As I have said, additional hardware using mirrors will allow you to use a rear-facing camera with a front screen
And software solutions will allow you to use a rear camera for video calling, but you will not be able to see the screen directly (not without a mirror).
There is no way that a software solution alone can allow you to use a rear-facing camera to make video calls where you can also see the screen. It's verging on ridiculous that you believe there might be.0 -
How about a wireless mini CCTV pointing at yourself so you can watch the screen on your phone? They come in button sizes now and could probably be fixed on the front and/or back. :cool:0
