On the verge of taking British Gas to court

How much contact have you had with BG over the last 8 years? It does seem like a long time for the issue to go on, but over that time you must have still been making payments, giving regular meter readings to ensure the balance is correct, and receiving bills. As a result you would have been aware of what the balance is and each time you spoke to BG or each time they tried to review your payments you must have discussed the issue with them? They may argue that this is enough for them have taken proactive action to tackle the debt.
How has the debt accrued? How much is for usage and how much is letters/admin charges? How much have you been paying for usage (ie excluding debt) each month? I don't think you will get very far in court if your only arguement is that the debt is BG'a fault and they should have stopped it accruing because they knew you were on benefits. How do you suggest that they should have stopped you getting into debt? If it is simply a case of using more than you can afford then this is not BG's fault and not something that they can change (although it is arguable that an adivser should have suggested fuel direct to you).
If you could post some more info with facts and figures we may be able to advise better. How much is the debt? How much are you paying towards it? How much is you usage? What offers have you made to BG? What payment plans have they offered over the last 8 years?
EDIT: Fuel direct would probably be the cheapest options, but it you still want a prepayment meter, could you ask them to shift the debt to the electricty account if this is also with BG and then have a ppm installed for electricity?0 -
I have to agree all suppliers have had the IGT issue, what you have to take into account is their are several IGTS and for you to have a pre-pay their has to be supplier contracts in place for emergency support etc of it.
They are coming, but been honest you would be laughed at for those reasons at court. Remember it takes 2 to build a debtDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0 -
I had along standing problem with BG being passed around from pillar to post - for 18 months
I emailed the CEO
A day later I got a response that another lady would be contacting me within 48 hours
48 hours later she did so
48 hours after that my case was resolved
I am using the CEO route more and more often now
In fact my next one is due to be Tesco !!0 -
