WD TV Live or Apple TV???

    I've been put off by apple tv because it doesn't have a usb to support ext hd for media.

    I like the idea of the RaspPi running xbmc thought, looks promising.

    That's what I have set up at home and works great. I have a USB WiFi adapter plugged directly into the Pi and can stream from the internet and NAS. Total cost is pretty good too ~£50

    What I think I would do is attatch the wifi usb and my hard drive then install XBMC using the sd card. Only thing it needs to do is have a IR sensor, then I'd do it.

    I use a Wireless Keyboard to control the device but you could get a remote control that has a USB input but you could instead use an existing IR remote with FLIRC: https://www.modmypi.com/raspberry-pi-accessories/flirc
    I'm also considering a USB hub and that way I can have more than 2 USB devices plugged into the Pi (Keyboard, WiFi, HDD)

    wow! Certainly a contender now. Just need to pay my car tax and buy my new freesat box then this is next on the list!
