For a cheap natural disinfectant I put a couple of tablespoons of liquid castille soap in a spray bottle, top it up with water and add a few drops of tea-tree oil.

  • I don't trust my worktop. It isn't a smooth surface.

I only ever prepare food on plates or clean glass chopping boards.
The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.

I don't think the OP actually prepares the food on the worktops...

:rotfl: Sorry, I meant DIRECTLY on the worktops. The person who posted before me assumed she was using the worktops as a chopping board, I think...

I still buy Dettol, though I can't think why it's so bloomin' expensive, it was £3.27 for the bottle Ijust bought.
Is there anywhere that sells it at a discount?

I put water in a spray bottle and a few drops of tea tree oil. That keeps me happy but I don't prepare food on them. I use it to wipe down my (wooden) draining board though. You can get tea tree from Boots, Mellika.

    So did I :D

I put a bit of bleach and a bit of washing up liquid in a spray bottle then fill it with water. A quick spray and wipe and the job's done - none of us have had food poisoning. The only reason I use bleach is because I have white worktops and I want them to stay white. Hot soapy water is good enough for most things.

I've always thought that we're too clean nowadays, and wipe out the good bugs along with the bad. I'm convinced that most allergies/mild illnesses are caused by kids not building up immunity because they're wrapped in cotton wool and live in sterilised houses.
