Is compulsory auto-renew legal?

Options
I'm happy I just got a good deal on house insurance from swiftcover, but notice there is no option to cancel auto-renew. Is this legal? If so I guess I will just have to make a note to cancel if I find a better deal next year, but does seem presumptuous.

They will have given you the opportunity to be aware of it prior to you agreeing to it of your own free will.

    You weren't "forced" into it!

    yes it is legal.

Seeing as most people renew it isnt that presumptuous. The renewal letter will make it clear what you should do at the time.

No, it's totally not legal and you should send the police round there.

You chose to use that company and that is part of their terms.

Is it illegal for McDonalds not to sell me a Vindaloo at 3am when im drunk and lost my way?

You can ask the question, Do you auto renew, If they say yes then go elsewhere.

My insurer must be one of the few that actually state in the letter i wont be covered if i dont contact them.

I would prefer an auto renew, So far they have been way cheaper than the comparison websites.

Just contact them to ask them to remove the auto renewal marker. They will be able to do this, as their system will have some renewals that they manually process.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

    It is legal.

As others have said you need to contact them and tell them not to auto-renew.

The best way to do this is in a recorded delivery letter where you keep the receipt and a copy of the letter.

This has the advantage over a phone call of:
    1. They cannot deny you sent the letter but which they can do with a phone call, and,
    2. They cannot get away with stating they can't stop the auto-renewal, and,
    3. If they do take the money out and cause you any financial issues, you can chase them not only for the refund but the extra cost they have caused you.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
