Refused Voluntary Redundancy

Options
Hi

My employer has requested voluntary redundancy applicants as they have to make a certain number of redundancies for commercial reasons

I applied for voluntary redundancy and was refused. I was told that this would not change. Is it fair that a company can refuse voluntary and make someone else redundant who did not apply?

Furthermore; I found another job and handed in my notice, thinking no more of it, you win some you lose some. However; since me doing this, one of my colleagues has been told that he will not be getting made redundant (no legal link between the two but its blatantly obvious that they want him knowing that I am leaving).

Is the company playing games with people in the hope to reap the benefits of not paying redundancy? it is growing increasingly difficult to see any other explanation.

I would be interested in anyone who has thoughts.
I cannot help but feel like I have been screwed over for a hefty redundancy payout.

It all sounds fairly normal and above board to me.
Them asking for VRs is only a means to see who is willing to leave easily.
If they were only to ask those who they wanted to go, it'd get awfully messy, so they ask everyone.

If you want a redundancy payment you have to keep your employment opportunities secret and play the waiting game.

As an employer one practice to see if people are going to jump even if you want to keep them, those that apply for VR are often looking to leave anyway, where it is clear it will be to another job you can play them they will often have started looking, where it is to take time out/retire/down job the chances are they will wait and stay.

When people start resigning you(employer) adjust the numbers you need to pay off.
