When me and hubby got engaged I paid for him to have a tattoo as an engagement gift (didn't seem fair to me he had to buy me a ring and not to get anything in return!)

The tattoo has nothing to do with our engagement etc, just a design he'd been eyeing up for ages, but he had the date of our wedding added underneath it on our 1st anniversary.

I say its a great idea.

Not something I would consider as a gift even if my OH liked them. I'd rather look for a nice experience, fun day out or holiday, unless there was a specific item he really wanted/needed. Quite often there is something electronic he wants (phone, music, dvds...).
For people who like tattoos, though, getting one done *is* a nice experience. :p

OP, I think it's a fab idea - the time/voucher idea sounds great!

We did the same thing - I paid for OH to have a tattoo he'd wanted for years as his engagement gift :)

Absolutely. Buy him a voucher for a good tattoo artist.

I have several tattoos that were gifts. I love them.

I've not long had my 2nd tattoo and am eyeing up a beautiful design that my tattooist has done. I can't afford to have it done yet but would love my hubby to give me some towards it. Not going to happen though cause he really hates tattoos lol.

I say go for the voucher :)

I got Tattoo vouchers for my birthday last year and now I have a tattoo that I got for my 30th b/day and one I got 10 years ago for my 21st. Although this year isn't a special b/day Id still appreciate tattoo vouchers so I can put it towards my next tattoo that I want

Thank you everyone, I've started some sketches to show to OH and the artist :)

I will probably get him another gift he can "open" on his birthday too.

I've been having difficulty thinking about what to get OH for his birthday (he'll be 33) and a mutual friend suggested another tattoo as he already has one and has been on about "getting it finished" for ages.

He's also asked me to design it within some specification boundaries, which has just made me nervous, but that's another story. I was just thinking of buying the time with the tattooist as a voucher!

Anyway, tattooed peeps...is this a good idea? Would you do it for your partner?

I brought OH his Download festival tattoo last year (Download dog in puple in the centre of the cross on his back) as his fathers days gift from the animals (yes they are our kids yes they get us presents lol)

I think it is a great idea and OH is paying for my next one as my wedding present I can't wait.

My local tattooist does vouchers so shouldn't be too difficult.

With regards to the design I think you'll be fine you know your OH well and any tattooist worth their salt will help where they can

Make sure your OH is comfortable with the artist and/or the artist is comfortable with the style of tattoo your OH wants as well. Obviously if you're designing it then you can tell him/her what it is but I would research the artist first if they're not someone that you've used before.
