I had my lower wisdom teeth removed under local anaesthetic. It was horrendous although my dentist was very good. He had to break the teeth in order to get them out and he had to keep topping up the LA. Afterwards I couldn't open my mouth my jaw had fixed. I couldn't eat solid food only drink. The bruising was so bad it looked like someone had tried to strangle me, in fact a colleague at work said that!

The dentist phoned me the same evening and offered to come round with some morphine  afterwards he apologised and said I should have had them out via a GA.

Sounds like you had a bad dentist for that!

I've had both my upper wisdom teeth out on separate occasions.

The first one was fine and there was very little pain afterwards and it healed nicely.

The other however shattered when being extracted (it was somewhat decayed due to the inability to keep it clean) and that wasn't the best experience on having the remaining fragments 'dug' out quickly and it was somewhat sore for a few days afterwards.

Nothing to worry about - I don't particularly like visiting the dentist and absolutely detest needles but I was fine :)

I had both my bottom wisdom teeth out just over 3 weeks ago, apparently the bottom ones are more complicated/tricky to extract than the top ones so the dentist referred me to hospital to have them out under GA.

Well one came out fine and the other was a tough one to get out so the surgeon said he had to drill it out! My mouth was very swollen and bruised and I couldnt open my mouth very wide or eat any solid food. I was not in too much pain for the first 2 days and then it intensified on 1 side, the side where it was tricky to get out so just assumed it was because of that, but a week later I was in excruciating pain so went to the emergency dentist who said I had dry socket and packed it with something covered in antibacterial something or other to help the wound heal. They also prescribed some strong antibiotics and (very) slowly the pain subsided, so nearly 4 weeks later and im only now getting back to normal and eating solid food, I still eat really slowly as it hurts to open my mouth wide enough and the jaw can still ache. I take special care with my dental health and make sure I floss and brush properly, im using corsodyl but only for a short time because it stains your teeth.

So all in all its been a tough ride, but least now they are out! I definately wouldnt of had the procedure under LA I think I would of be scarred for life personally! But everyone's teeth are different so no procedure is gonna have the same results is it? If your teeth looked like they were gonna be tricky ones im sure they would of said you needed GA, maybe your look like they wont be difficult to extract? My dentist specifically said mine were gonna be tricky ones, but they defo needed to come out!

Anyways good luck and make sure after 24 hours you keep rinsing your mouth with salty water at least 4 times a day, especially after eating, and stock up on painkillers.

    See the bold....

If it gets to this stage, just get hold of his 'man bits' and say
'Now, we aren't going to hurt each other, are we, Mr Dentist:D

Lol erm this might be a bit difficult as the dentist is a lady as am I so she might deem this rather odd but am primed and ready to start screaming like a banshee if things get out of hand in the dentist chair lol!!! :rotfl:

Oh no sorry to hear you had a real bad time of it and ended up with the dreaded dry socket!! hope you are ok now and things starting to improve for you.

I will bear your advice in mind with the salt water rinses and stockpile of painkillers.

They seemed to think it would be relatively straightforward but with regard to the bottom one apparently this looks from x ray to be close to the nerve so what they might need to do is take the top of the tooth off but leave the roots in the gum and stitch it over, was not over the moon with this suggestion but they know best so will see how it goes!
