Impacted wisdom teeth out under local?

Hello all,
I know there was a previous thread about wisdom teeth and have done some research but if anyone has any experience of having impacted wisdom teeth out under LA can you please let me know what it was truly like? I need the honest truth, no matter how good, bad or ugly!! I know everyone is different and no two wisdom teeth cases are the same but I have this booked for 2 weeks time and need to know what to expect. I have previously had teeth removed but always been under GA
Will cut a long story short lower impacted wisdom tooth (at a 45 degree angle to front of mouth) on left side started occassionally hurting, infections etc and is pressing on the back of molar in front and if left will cause damage etc (according to my dentist) the upper one is fine but is growing down past the level of the molars in front of it, presumably because of the angle of the lower one its not their to meet it etc saw orthodontist last week and they recommend taking both out at same time under LA, I agreed at the time and thought okey dokey sounds good, now the reality is starting to hit home and I am starting to get sweaty palms about the whole thing!

I've had an upper wisdom out under LA, grown at an odd angle, prone to infection, etc, and I couldn't believe how quick and easy it was - I went back to work straight afterwards and no problems. My dentist said at the time that wisdom teeth are often more shallow rooted, but I don't know if that's true. I'd have thought the main problem with having 2 out is that you'll be very very numb - I'd be inclined to ask if you could have the 2 extractions separately.0

Hi Sallysocks,
Thanks very much for your reply, glad to hear you didnt have a bad experience with having your's out and was straight back to work, good point as had not thought about the numbness effect of having two out at the same time! did you have any swelling or bruising afterwards?0 -
Personally, I would have them done at the same time and its all over and done with. 3 or four hours and the numbness has all but gone.
Seperately, 3 or four hours x 2, I had most of my upper teeth extracted a couple of years ago, a denture fitted immediately. Straight back to work at 1pm, had my tea at 5, no problem. No bruising, no pain, dentures took a bit of getting used to but you put up with that. We do have a couple or 3 dentists on here and Im sure at least one of them will be along with reassurance.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Hi Watto
I'd agree with Mckneff - get it over with in one go.
I've had two of my four wisdom teeth out, in separate occasions years apart and had no trouble with either of them.
One was a bit of trouble coming out (I had visions of the dentist having to brace his foot on my chest at one point :rotfl:) but it popped out eventually. Really, extractions are so quick they are much less stressful than fillings IMO.
You do hear a slight 'crunch' and then a kind of sucky sound but its over so quick there's no time to get squeamish over it.
The first one was extracted when I was 19 and it was during college holidays so I just had my mum spoil me for the rest of the day
The second one was about 4 years ago at 9am and I went straight to work afterwards. Numbness was gone by lunchtime and I ate fine. The next day I flew to Cyprus for my holidays! The worse thing was the salt-water mouth rinses yueck!!!
You'll be fine. At worst, you might need a couple of paracetamol after the numbnes wears off because the jaw sometimes aches slightly, buts its nothing significant. You had me at your proper use of "you're".0 -
Thanks very much for the helpful and reassuring replies, I think getting them over and done with at the same time is going to be the best way forward, am a bit more relaxed after reading your replies that it was nothing too major and back to work the same day!
Am hoping mine are straightforward and come out quick and easily, without dentist having to resort to the ole knee on chest scenario lol! have wangled 4 days off work to rest so thats an incentive to go ahead with it lol!0 -
I had all 4 of mine out at the same time, only 1 had managed to come through the gum though so I had the gums cut open then the teeth were broken with a chisel type thing and the pieces removed, then I was stitched up. I was very bruised, looked like Marlon Brando from the Godfather!! I had local and a bit of stuff in a drip that made me a bit woozy but not sleepy. It was to keep me still for all that time as I remember. Glad I had them out as they were impacted and growing along the gum pushing all my other teeth out of line and very painful. My son had his out last year, same problem but the dentist wouldn't do it and sent him to hospital and a GA.0

See the bold....
If it gets to this stage, just get hold of his 'man bits' and say
'Now, we aren't going to hurt each other, are we, Mr Dentist:Dmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I had a wisdom tooth out (not impacted) during my lunch break.
Felt great till the aneathetic wore off, then felt absolutely exhausted, couldn't get out of bed the next day, so a few days recovery is probably good planning.0 -
I had a broken angled wisdom tooth out under local and was drinking coffee and eating a bacon sandwich an hour and a half later.0

I got all 4 of mine out under GA, lots of swelling and bruising. Felt awful afterwards. Was signed off work for 2weeks. Everyone will be different but think its best to get it done and dusted at one sitting.Life is a coin, you can spend it anyway you wish, but you can only spend it once.
Go as far as you can see, and when you get there you'll see further.
Take time but don't waste time0
